FNGLA Hosted FFA Statewide Competition!

March 18, 2020

What better way to spend a Thursday than with 300+ students competing in horticulture events? FNGLA’s 24 volunteer members did just this as FNGLA once again hosted middle and high school FFA chapters in: plant, pest and tool ID; floral design; irrigation operation; and, plant propagation.

A tip of FNGLA’s cap and special thanks to lead volunteers Maria Muhlhahn (Westbay Landscape) and Bonnie Desmond (Pinellas County Parks), along with crew chiefs Gary and Lisa Scharf (Legacy Landscaping), Mike Totherow (T&C Trees), Matt Blowers (Orange County Utilities) and Peg Jenson & Monica Yates (American Institute of Floral Designers). Another big tip of FNGLA’s cap goes to our signature sponsors who made such a phenomenal day possible: Arazoza Brothers Corp. in Princeton; Jon’s Nursery in Eustis; Flowers Central in Daytona Beach; and, Commercial Lawn Care in Clearwater.  And, there were 26 additional FNGLA members and FNGLA Chapters who contributed funds and supplies to this event!

This is just another of the workforce development programs FNGLA continues to host with the goal of encouraging Florida’s best and brightest to consider careers in Florida’s nursery and landscape industry.  If this group of blue-jacketed students is any indication – our industry’s future is very bright!
