Recently, many of us watched with pride and excitement as the NASA Artemis mission continued to move forward, an extraordinary reminder of what can happen when people dare to ask, “what if?

What if we could reach farther, build smarter, and accomplish something once thought impossible? Progress begins when someone is willing to ask “why not?

That same spirit lives within FNGLA.

Our association continues to grow because members and volunteers across Florida are willing to imagine new possibilities, embrace challenges, and work together toward a stronger future for our industry. From local chapter events to statewide advocacy, education, networking, and member engagement, progress happens when people come together with curiosity, purpose, and the belief that there is always more we can achieve.

Last year, as part of my President’s Letter, I had the pleasure of introducing several of our outstanding FNGLA chapter leaders. As we continue that recognition this year, I would like to once again spotlight the dedicated volunteers who ask “What if we could do more?” and “Why not take the next step?

These are the leaders who serve as the local connection to FNGLA and help our chapters thrive.

They create opportunities for members to grow professionally, build relationships, stay informed, and remain engaged within their communities. Their leadership reminds us that great things often begin with a simple idea and the willingness to act on it.

This month, I’m pleased to highlight two outstanding chapter leaders whose commitment and vision make a meaningful impact:

Broward Chapter

Representing Broward County, Chapter President Peter James has served as an FNGLA volunteer for nine years. Peter shares that he chose to serve because FNGLA opened doors to many possibilities within the industry, and he wanted to give back the same support he received, hoping to positively impact others along the way.

Peter sees tremendous opportunity for growth within the Broward Chapter, noting that Ft. Lauderdale is at the forefront of innovation in our industry. He believes this creates an exciting chance for members to adapt, grow together, and help shape the future of horticulture.

A fun fact about Peter is that he currently holds seven FNGLA certifications, reflecting his commitment to professional development and industry excellence. And if you’ve ever attended the Broward Chapter’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Bash, you already know they know how to host a great event.

Highlands Heartland Chapter

Austin says he serves because he wants to contribute to the industry and help ensure its continued success. Austin believes the biggest opportunity for the Highlands Heartland Chapter is activating new members and inviting more people in the area to become involved. With many new faces entering the region, he sees strong potential for growth and engagement. A fun fact about Austin is his passion for advocacy. He enjoys participating in FNGLA Political Action Committee (FNGLA-PAC) events and believes it is essential to support legislation that helps our industry and small businesses thrive.

Austin also shared that there is a lot of excitement surrounding the Highlands Heartland Chapter right now, and he is eager to see how it continues to grow in the future.

Just like any great mission, FNGLA’s future depends on people willing to ask “what if?,” challenge “why not?,” and work together to move forward. I’m grateful for chapter leaders like Peter and Austin and for all those helping our organization reach new heights.

Best,

Marcella Lucio-Chinchilla

FNGLA 2025-26 President
