President's Letter: Celebrating the Past Year and Getting Energized for What is to Come
As my term as FNGLA President comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on what an incredible journey this year has been — full of inspiring people, purposeful progress, and meaningful collaboration. Thank you for the honor of serving this outstanding association.
We have just returned from FNGLA Annual Convention. This location wasn't just a top-tier resort — it was symbolic. Shingle Creek is known as the northernmost headwaters of the Florida Everglades, one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth.
This was a fitting backdrop to reflect on our industry’s role in protecting Florida’s water. Whether it’s through smarter irrigation systems, sustainable landscape design, or BMP training, FNGLA members continue to lead the way in promoting responsible water use and environmental stewardship. We gathered to celebrate our industry, so let’s also renew our commitment to the natural resources that make Florida, Florida.
One of the most important wins for Florida agriculture this year was the passage and signing of the Florida Farm Bill (SB 700). Signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis on May 15, this landmark legislation strengthens agricultural operations across the state—especially those in nursery and landscape sectors.
Governor DeSantis recognized the significance of our industry, stating that Florida’s floriculture sector now represents 18% of the total U.S. floriculture value—a powerful testament to our impact on both the state and national economy.
The bill includes important provisions such as housing for legally verified agricultural workers, emergency fuel access, and support for farm operations facing disaster recovery. These updates will help ensure the continued vitality and growth of Florida’s green industry.
On behalf of FNGLA, thank you to every senator and representative who supported and voted for this important legislation. Your leadership is helping secure a stronger future for Florida agriculture, its workforce, and communities.
Another point of pride this year has been the launch of FNGLA’s Emerging Leaders Program. Congratulations to the incredible members of Class I, who have shown remarkable passion, innovation, and dedication to the future of Florida’s green industry. You represent the best of what’s to come.
We’re now accepting nominations for Class II, and I strongly encourage you to nominate someone — or yourself by emailing Linda Adams at LAdams@fngla.org. This is a transformative opportunity for growth, networking, and leadership development. Let’s continue building a strong pipeline of future FNGLA leaders.
Be sure to check out this month’s UF/IFAS column, which highlights the exciting collaborative work between UF/IFAS and FNGLA. One standout initiative is our joint effort to provide horticulture certification and BMP training to inmates in Florida’s prison system. This initiative not only prepares individuals for successful reintegration into the workforce, but it also strengthens our industry's labor pool and community impact. It's a testament to how powerful shared vision and effort can be.
At Annual Convention we celebrated how far we’ve come — and got energized for what lies ahead. It’s been a privilege to serve as your president. I enjoyed seeing so many of you at Shingle Creek, and will continue to support FNGLA in every way I can.
Your FNGLA 2024-25 President,
Phillip Hisey
