President's Letter: Turning the Page on 2024

Whew, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is officially over. Going back to June, during FNGLA Annual Convention when I attended the FNGLA Past Presidents Reception, many of our association’s past presidents attempted to reassure me on the demands of this position by offering in jest, “It’s only two trade shows and four board meetings…what could go wrong?”

Nobody mentioned three hurricanes. I’m glad to say the season is over, but the other struggles continue: labor shortages, water issues, the list goes on and on.

In November, we kicked off the FNGLA Emerging Leaders Program in Gainesville. There is lots of excitement in this program and much to learn throughout our state. I had the opportunity and honor to address the first class of leaders on water use issues in the state, and something caught my attention.  Have you ever simply Googled “Water issues in Florida?”

Looming water shortages seem to be the narrative of so many articles, coupled with pollution. How are we as an industry helping? On December 5 and 6, FNGLA CEO Tal Coley and I attended the 14th Annual Florida Water Forum, hosted by the Associated Industries of Florida. Several state senators and representatives were in attendance. Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson also attended, along with numerous state lawmakers. It was promising to hear and reflect on where we as a state are heading in terms of water use and policy.

On December 9, FNGLA’s Irrigation Committee will meet to review and discuss upcoming events and happenings we as an industry are working to resolve. Model ordinance language for irrigation use is being drafted, and we hope to hear good news from those drafting.  More to come…

Looking ahead to the new year, the 2025 Tropical Plant International Expo (TPIE) is just around the corner. This international marketplace for foliage, floral, tropicals, and related materials will take place January 22-24.  Last I heard, exhibitor space was sold out -- but still growing!

This year’s Opening Session is looking be a great one. Brett Culp will present “Always Evolving: Build Influence, Capture Opportunity, Create Connections.”

But, before we turn the page on 2024, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention FNGLA’s exciting slate of planned holiday events. Check FNGLA’s Calendar for individual dates. I am planning to celebrate alongside as many of you as possible at a chapter holiday party near you.

Your FNGLA President 2024-2025
