FNGLA is committed to lighting the path for the next generation of Florida's Horticulture industry. Below are a list of available scholarships offered through FNGLA's chapters and other industry partners: 

The James H. Davis Memorial Scholarship


About: In 1996, a gift of $400,000 was given from the estate of James H. Davis, a respected tree farm owner and former member of the then Florida Nurserymen and Growers Association (FNGA). This generous gift launched an effort to provide career paths for qualified students who were in financial need. Since then, other contributors have seen the same need for providing scholarships and this area of the fund has continued to grow. Applicants must be incoming college freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors and/or graduate students planning to attend a community college, college or university in the state of Florida.

Eligibility: Scholarships are based on financial need, student's ability to maintain a 2.0 grade point average, and full-time enrollment in a horticulture program or related field with the intent to graduate in that field.


Big Bend Chapter Scholarship


About: Each year the Big Bend Chapter of the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) awards one or more scholarships to students. The scholarship program was started in 1994 to encourage students to obtain a degree in horticulture or a related field and enter the Florida horticulture and landscape industry. In 2009, scholarship opportunities were extended to persons seeking FNGLA certification.

Eligibility: Students who reside in the Big Bend area will have first priority. However, applicants are accepted from other areas. Students are also encouraged to seek scholarship opportunities from other FNGLA Chapters and the National Horticulture Foundation


Living Legend Scholarship


About: The purpose of the Living Legend Scholarship is to encourage student to pursue careers in the horticulture industry.

Eligibility:  This scholarship is open to any student entering or currently attending a Junior College or four-year college or university and who is a graduate of a Miami-Dade County High School. You must be pursuing a degree in horticultural sciences, landscape architecture, or other related agricultural field. You must also have 2.5(B) or above Grade Point Average (GPA). You may re-apply annually as long as they maintain a 2.5 GPA. You must also maintain full-time status as a student to be eligible for scholarship.

Requirements: 1. Complete scholarship application in full. 2. Provide an official transcript for the current year. 3. Complete Essay. 4. Enclose requested letters of recommendation. 5. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Also, application must be typed or printed legibly.


Manasota Chapter - FNGLA Scholarship 


Award Amount: $500-$2,000

About:  The purpose of this scholarship is to acknowledge, help financially with grants and help win other ways, those students, teachers, sponsors or others this scholarship committee may deem appropriate to benefit the horticulture industry in Florida.

Eligibility: This scholarship is open to any qualifying student with established residency in Florida, but first preference will be given to students from Sarasota, Manatee and Desoto counties. 

Requirements: 1. Must have an interest in pursuing a career in horticulture. 2. Must plan to continue to work or teach in the horticulture industry in Florida. 3. Must be enrolled as a full time horticulture student at an institution of higher learning recognized by the scholarship committee, or must be enrolled in a work study program that will directly benefit the horticulture industry of Florida. 4. Recipients must reapply each year for continuation of the scholarship and maintain higher than a 2.0 GPA.


Northeast Chapter - FNGLA Scholarship


Award Amount: 



Requirements: Applicants for Northeast Chapter awards should submit requests as follows: 1. A letter requesting assistance from FNGLA’s Northeast Chapter (include a goal statement re: a career in the “Green Industry”) 2. A letter stating work history (past 5 years) 3. A letter of reference from any previous work supervisor(s) (past 5 years) 4. A letter of reference from two teachers (past 5 years) 5. Copies of school transcripts (past 5 years) 6. A list of honors, achievement awards, volunteer work or club involvement (past 5 years) 7. A statement showing costs for both the fall and spring semester (include housing, transportation, books and tuition) 8. An itemized statement of financial aide to include: (family support, personal income or other scholarships received)

FNGLA's Palm Beach Chapter Bob Hoskins/Sandy McDougald Horticultural Scholarship 


Award Amount: 

Details: The Bob Hoskins and Sandy McDougald Scholarship was established by the Palm Beach Chapter of the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) to commemorate the dedication, enthusiasm and many years of service contributed to the horticultural industry by Bob and Sandy. Numerous industry members have generously supported the fund to help educate each new generation of industry professionals.

Eligibility: Applicant must demonstrate acceptance or enrollment into a horticulture or related field program with a vocational school, community college, four-year university degree program, or graduate school. Each scholarship selection is based upon academic excellence and a demonstrated desire for a career in horticulture or related fields.


  • Completed two-page scholarship application
  • High school (if no college transcripts are available yet), or college transcripts forwarded from the institution. (These must be received by the annual application deadline of January 15)
  • Proof of acceptance or enrollment in vocational school, community college, four-year university, or graduate school for upcoming semester, if not currently attending.
  • Short essay (See final page of application for requirements)
  • Two letters of recommendation 


FNGLA Royal Palm Chapter's Past President Scholarship


Award Amount: Up to $1,000 each Spring and Fall

Details: The Royal Palm Chapter Scholarship Fund has been established to offer assistance to students studying horticulture or related fields.

Eligibility: Students whose permanent residence is in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry or Lee County will have first priority.

Requirements: An official college transcript must be included.

National Horticulture Foundation General Scholarship


Award Amount: 

Details: NHF's scholarship program was established to encourage undergraduate and graduate students of Horticulture/Marketing to follow a career path in the growing and marketing of foliage. NHF's Board of Directors shall be responsible for selecting the individuals to receive scholarship awards.

Eligibility: The following criteria are required: • Applicant must maintain an above average grade point of 2.5 • Only one application will be accepted from any university or college in any year. • Applicant must be an incoming freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student planning to attend a community college, college, university or other post graduate program. • The student must enroll full-time in a horticulture program or related field with the intent to graduate in that field. Award recipients are eligible to reapply for scholarship annually. 

Requirements: Students must return all of the following to the National Horticulture Foundation by the required annual deadline of January 15: • Completed scholarship application • High school or college transcripts (can be forwarded by institution, but must received before deadline) • Essay • Two letters of recommendation.
